week 10 post 2: HCI role in game design and interface

To understand the role of human computer interaction in game design, it is necessary to find the connections between the two. First it is essential to know what they both are individually. Human computer interaction is a multidisciplinary field that creates technology that makes human interaction with computers easier. Game design is a mix of programming, art, and writing to create the content and rules of a game. The main principles are player empathy to anticipate the reaction and feedback of a player. Understanding game players and their goals plays a key role in making the decision on what elements to use.

Interface design should ensure users functionality, ease of use, and customizable controls so that the user has a lot of control over the interface. The visual quality of a game is particularly important. A poor interface can ruin the entire video game experience. Making interfaces easy to learn and use makes games more enjoyable. But to achieve this a designer must use human computer interaction principles to make the interface intuitive and understand how humans perceive size, depth, brightness, and color. Human computer interaction principles must be integrated into game design to make the experience enjoyable and rewarding for the players.

  1. Do these designers need to study aspects of the brain, education, and learning too?
